Trump announces 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs
President Donald Trump announced in a 90-day pause on newly implemented country-specific reciprocal tariffs—except those applied to China.
The International Fresh Produce Association BB #:378962 released this member alert on April 9, 2025:
President Donald Trump announced in a Truth Social post on Wednesday a 90-day pause on newly implemented country-specific reciprocal tariffs—except those applied to China.
During this pause, all affected tariffs will be temporarily reduced to a 10 percent baseline rate, effective immediately. Very few details have been provided by the administration at this point.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said negotiations with individual countries are ongoing. The move follows the rollout of a 10 percent across-the-board tariff on most U.S. imports on April 5, and the implementation of higher, country-specific tariffs earlier this week. Goods covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement are still exempt from tariffs.
In the same statement, President Trump said he is raising the reciprocal tariff on Chinese goods to 125 percent, effective immediately, calling for an end to what he described as long-standing trade imbalances.
IFPA will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates as more details emerge regarding the delay, China’s increased rate, and ongoing negotiations. Updates and resources will be posted on IFPA’s tariff resources page. In the meantime, email USGR@freshproduce.com with any questions.
