Ahead of Labor Day and the start of football season, Food Lion BB #:165295 is exclusively bringing a colorful new item to over 500 select produce departments this weekend — Violet Corn from Virginia Produce BB #:170974 and Light Farms BB #:175038 in Laurel Fork, Virginia.

Here’s what you need to know about Violet Corn:
• It’s exceptionally sweet, with nearly twice the Brix level of conventional bicolor corn and continues developing color even after harvest.
• Due to its higher sugar content, it also has a shorter shelf life than traditional sweet corn, so shoppers are encouraged to enjoy it soon after purchase.
• It has a very tight shuck. Some customers may occasionally see some silk remaining after processing, but a quick boil will cause it to easily release.

It’s the perfect addition to late-summer grilling, game-day spreads, and corn salsa creations. The limited-time crop – a result of years of testing and dedication – will be available only while supplies last.

Virginia Produce has supplied Food Lion with bicolor and yellow sweet corn for nearly 10 years, and experienced grower James Light of Light Farms also grows bicolor corn, jalapenos, peppers, snap beans and cucumbers for Food Lion’s Virginia Local Goodness program.
