The 50-percent tariffs on Canadian imports that were set to become effective today have been delayed as U.S.-Canadian negotiations go on this week.
A month ago, President Trump imposed three new 50-percent tariffs on a range of Canadian products in response to discriminatory actions against U.S. products, mostly dairy, alcohol, and cars.
Products that are currently covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) are not exempt from the new tariffs.
“I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three-day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!” Trump posted on Truth Social August 18.
In a statement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the neighboring countries made substantial progress, confirming Canada has agreed to a three-day delay while negotiations continued.
