If your Chicagoland store is short a few bananas this week, it’s because they’re all at Jewel-Osco BB #:193326 in Westmont.
The retailer collaborated with Del Monte Fresh Produce BB #:111187 to build the World’s Largest Fruit Display with a record-breaking 77,365-pound installation of bananas on June 8.
The record was confirmed by officials from the Guinness Book of World Records, according to local media articles.
Following official confirmation, Jewel-Osco staged a banana giveaway to customers and bystanders, with the remaining slated for donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
While this does seem like a lot to give away in one fell swoop, Jewel-Osco says its 188 stores stock nearly 140,000 pounds of bananas per day.
