Peruvian ginger exports totaled 50,649 tons worth $106 million in 2020, which is 156 percent higher than the previous year.
The rise compares to 2019, where $42 million worth was exported, and in terms of volume, it’s 116 percent higher than the volume exported in 2019, according to the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP), as reported by Andina.
Europe was the main destination country with more than $55 million, an amount 175 percent higher than the previous year.
Regarding individual countries, the U.S. was the largest recipient with $47 million, representing 44 percent of ginger exports with a growth of more than 129 percent compared to the previous year. This was followed by the Netherlands with ginger exports worth $39 million, representing 37 percent of ginger exports and a growth of 197 percent compared to the previous year.

The remaining top destinations were made up of Spain ($5.6 million), Canada ($4.9 million), Russia ($3.4) million, Germany ($2.9 million), the UK ($1.7 million), Brazil ($1.1 million), Italy, Chile, and the Dominican Republic.
Gabriel Amaro, the executive director of AGAP, said, “Ginger is already an important product in Peru’s agro-export offering, due to the potential it has in various markets. A clear example of this is the strong growth it had in 2020, progress that occurred despite the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Ginger’s agro-export chain is made up of hundreds of small-medium producers, mainly from the Junin region, Amaro said.
