Produce buyers paid faster through late summer and gave much of that back in October.

Blue Book analysis shows 16.7 percent of trade reports showed payment beyond 35 days, the slowest share of any month this year and up from 11.2 percent in September. Anyone setting fall terms should look at that slow tail before extending more credit.

August was the year’s fastest month: 70.1 percent of reports landed within 28 days and only 10.4 percent went past 35. September slowed a little, and October slowed further. The fastest payers held their pace in October, with AA at 15.5 percent to match July’s high, while reports in the 22 to 35 day range shrank and the share past 35 days grew. The 60-plus-day F band reached 4.2 percent, its highest share of 2026.

October figures cover trade reports through Oct. 29.

Compared with September, D rose from 6.4 to 9.1 percent and F from 2.6 to 4.2 percent, while C fell to 19.1 percent, its lowest share this year.

Before extending terms to a new or existing customer, check their listed pay performance in Blue Book. November will show whether October’s slow tail was a one-month spike or the start of a fall trend.

“Month-to-month data can be volatile, and while August may have been an aberration, October was still in line with spring and summer, and better than winter months,” says Bill Zentner, Vice President of Ratings for Blue Book Services.

“Through a wider lens, though, the data deserves attention. Reports beyond 35 days rose to 16.7 percent in October, the highest of 2026, and the share past 60 days jumped from 2.6 to 4.2 percent in a single month,” he says.

“The fall brought real cash-flow pressure. Farm-level vegetable prices rose in September, and diesel and freight costs continued to rise, squeezing margins and slowing collections. Those pressures don’t explain any one company’s payment slowdown, but they’re a good reason to manage customer receivables more closely.”
