The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly Consumer Price Index Summary July, 15, 2025:
CONSUMER PRICE INDEX – JUNE 2025
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in June, after rising 0.1 percent in May, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.7 percent before seasonal adjustment.
The index for shelter rose 0.2 percent in June and was the primary factor in the all items monthly increase. The energy index rose 0.9 percent in June as the gasoline index increased 1.0 percent over the month. The index for food increased 0.3 percent as the index for food at home rose 0.3 percent and the index for food away from home rose 0.4 percent in June.
The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2 percent in June, following a 0.1-percent increase in May. Indexes that increased over the month include household furnishings and operations, medical care, recreation, apparel, and personal care. The indexes for used cars and trucks, new vehicles, and airline fares were among the major indexes that decreased in June.
The all items index rose 2.7 percent for the 12 months ending June, after rising 2.4 percent over the 12 months ending May. The all items less food and energy index rose 2.9 percent over the last 12 months. The energy index decreased 0.8 percent for the 12 months ending June. The food index increased 3.0 percent over the last year.
Food
The index for food increased 0.3 percent in June, as it did in May. The food at home index also rose 0.3 percent over the month. Three of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased in June, while the other three declined. The index for nonalcoholic beverages rose 1.4 percent in June, as the index for coffee increased 2.2 percent. The fruits and vegetables index rose 0.9 percent over the month, as the citrus fruits index increased 2.3 percent. The index for other food at home increased 0.2 percent in June.
In contrast, the cereals and bakery products index declined 0.2 percent over the month following a 1.1-percent increase in May. The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs fell 0.1 percent in June as a 7.4-percent decrease in the index for eggs was partially offset by a 2.0-percent increase in the index for beef. The dairy and related products index decreased 0.3 percent over the month.
The food away from home index rose 0.4 percent in June. The index for full service meals rose 0.5 percent over the month and the index for limited service meals increased 0.2 percent.
The index for food at home rose 2.4 percent over the 12 months ending in June. The meats, poultry, fish, and eggs index rose 5.6 percent over the last 12 months as the eggs index increased 27.3 percent. The index for nonalcoholic beverages increased 4.4 percent over the same period, and the index for other food at home rose 1.3 percent. The fruits and vegetables index increased 0.7 percent over the 12 months ending in June. The index for cereals and bakery products and the index for dairy and related products each increased 0.9 percent over the same period.
The food away from home index rose 3.8 percent over the last year. The index for full service meals rose 4.0 percent and the index for limited service meals rose 3.5 percent over the same period.
Fruits and vegetables
The fresh fruits and vegetables index rose 1.1 percent from June 2024 to June 2025. From May to June 2025, the index fell -0.1 percent. Fresh fruits were up 3.4 percent year-over-year, but down -0.8 percent month-over-month. Fresh vegetables were down -1.3 percent year-over-year but rose 0.7 percent from May to June 2025. Lettuce and tomatoes were down -4.7 percent and -4.5 percent, respectively, year-over-year. Apples rose 7.2 percent year-over-year.
