IFPA calls on FDA for better food safety communication

In a September 16, 2026 letter to Kyle Diamantas, acting Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, the International Fresh Produce Association BB #:378962 called for better cooperation and communication on food safety.

Max Teplitski, IFPA Chief Science Officer, wrote, “We ask the FDA to work with us to strengthen both consumer confidence and the produce supply chain.”

A Cyclospora outbreak linked to Mexican-grown lettuce this summer caused more than 12,000 reported illnesses in 21 states and two deaths.

FDA declared the outbreak over on September 11.

IFPA said the outbreak significantly harmed the fresh produce industry, and the repercussions were not limited to lettuce or leafy greens.

In the letter, Teplitski asked for clearer communication and transparent root cause analysis. He also asked for FDA’s support on research into traceability in the produce industry.

He wrote, “This work is an opportunity to show consumers how industry and regulators can turn lessons learned into practical improvements.”

“Consumers should see how our shared commitment to food safety translates into action,” Teplitski wrote. “Working together, the FDA and the fresh produce industry can strengthen the system that protects families and the confidence that helps them enjoy fresh produce.”
