West Mexico braces for Hurricane Polo landfall

Hurricane Polo is a major Category Three hurricane approaching Baja California Sur this morning, with sustained winds near 115 mph.

It is forecast to cross the peninsula today, enter the Gulf of California, and make a second landfall in southern Sonora tonight or early Tuesday before rapidly weakening inland. A second storm is forming south of Polo and may strengthen later this week.

As of 5:00 a.m. MST, Polo was centered approximately 125 miles southwest of Cabo San Lazaro, moving north-northeast near 10 mph.

The core is expected to reach the west coast of Baja California Sur late this afternoon or early evening, cross the peninsula, and move inland across southern Sonora late tonight or early Tuesday.

Polo is forecast to remain near major-hurricane strength at the first landfall and a hurricane at the second.

Destructive winds, flash flooding, mudslides, storm surge, and high surf are expected today across portions of Baja California Sur and into Tuesday across Sonora.

Forecast rainfall totals are 6 to 12 inches in Baja California Sur and 4 to 6 inches in southern and central Sonora, with isolated totals near 8 inches.

Port closures, road restrictions, power outages, harvest interruptions, reduced field access, and loading or crossing delays are possible today and Tuesday, with residual transportation and quality impacts potentially continuing through the week.

Asparagus, chiles, cucumbers, green onions, squash, tomatoes and other vegetables from Baja California Sur and new Autumn crops in northwest Mexico will be monitored closely by growers.

Polo is forecast to weaken rapidly after moving inland and dissipate by late Tuesday or early Wednesday, although remnant moisture may extend flooding and transportation concerns farther north later this week.

Tropical Storm Rachel, positioned south-southeast of Polo off Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane later this week while moving west-northwest.

The current course keeps the center offshore early this week, however southwestern Mexico should monitor expanding rain, and a possible second hit to Baja by the end of the week.
