U.S. resumes full activities for Mexican avocados 

The U.S. has resumed full government activities in Michoacán, Mexico, including avocado inspections, after suspending activities last week and then partially resuming them earlier this week. 

Yesterday, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ron Johnson said on X, the resumption came following “security measures implemented in Michoacán by the Government of Mexico and our assessment of conditions on the ground,” effective August 13, 2026. 

“I recognize the Government of Mexico, particularly its Security Cabinet, for the actions and close coordination that made this full resumption possible efficiently. We will continue to monitor security conditions and adjust our operations as appropriate. Our priority remains the safety of U.S. personnel and the people of Michoacán. 

“This is another concrete result of the cooperation advanced by President Trump and President Sheinbaum. Working together, we are protecting our people, our food production, our supply chains, and the legitimate trade that benefit producers and consumers in our countries. 

“This outcome sends a clear message: when the United States and Mexico work together, we deliver results that strengthen the security and prosperity of our nations.” 

The suspension of activities started August 5 due to threats to American interests.  

Because the suspension only lasted about a week, no major disruptions to the avocado market in the U.S. are expected. 

Mexico supplies about 90 percent of the avocados consumed in the U.S., with about 75 to 80 percent coming from the state of Michoacan.
