According to The Association of Exporters (ADEX), Peruvian fruit and vegetable exports would lose $20 million each day that a transporter strike keeps the roads blocked.
ADEX explained that because of their perishable nature, these products need to maintain the cold chain to preserve their highest value. If they were to start to deteriorate, their selling price drops.
“On a daily average, we are talking about exports valued at $20 million, which are put at risk for each additional day of delay without solution or possibility that these products are transported with normal facilities to different ports,” Edgar Vasquez, the director of the Center for ADEX Global Business and Economy research, told El Comercio.
“If they do not continue their cold chain and their shipment is delayed, they will reach the supermarket shelves in different countries with less time and that reduces their price” Vasquez said. “The entire export flow is paralyzed, and it is very risky. We need the government to take action.”
