July 6, 2026 Blandon, PA – The Giorgio Companies (TGC) BB #:197339, a leading grower, packer, processor, and distributor of fresh and value-added mushrooms, announced its collaboration with Martin Lishman Ltd. to develop a custom “smart mushroom” sensor solution designed to enhance product quality across its operations.

Headquartered in Blandon, Pennsylvania, TGC is one of the largest mushroom producers in North America, serving retail, foodservice, and industrial customers across the United States and exporting to multiple international markets. With decades of expertise in mushroom cultivation and innovation, TGC continues to invest in technologies that improve quality, efficiency, and sustainability throughout its vertically integrated operations.

Driving Innovation in Quality Assurance
As part of its ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, Giorgio Fresh, TGC’s fresh division, identified process damage as an area of opportunity to further elevate product quality. The initiative was sparked by CEO Mark Currie, who previously implemented smart sensor technology in potato operations to measure impact and temperature throughout production processes.

Currie recommended exploring similar technology for mushrooms.

“Martin Lishman responded immediately and proved to be incredibly collaborative,” said Mark Currie, CEO of The Giorgio Companies. “Their team worked with us to design a mushroom-shaped sensor that accurately replicates the size, shape, and weight of our product. This allows us to truly understand what our mushrooms experience from growing through packing. The insights we’re gaining have been valuable in our efforts to deliver the highest-quality mushrooms to our customers.”

Developing the “Smart Mushroom”
Working jointly, TGC and Martin Lishman engineered a custom mushroom-shaped shell to house the ImpacTrack sensor. The device measures both impact and temperature throughout the production process. Designed for ease of use, the sensor requires only a smart device to initiate recording and retrieve data for analysis.

By placing the ImpacTrack sensors throughout the process, from growing rooms to harvesting, handling, and packing, TGC was able to identify high-impact points where mushrooms are most susceptible to bruising.

Turning Data into Measurable Improvements
Using the data collected, TGC is actively working to reduce impact at the highest recorded points in the process. The company will continue validating these improvements with the smart sensors to ensure measurable progress.

Reducing impact can help reduce bruising and improve visual appearance, a key factor in consumer purchasing decisions.

“Maintaining premium visual quality is essential in fresh produce,” Currie added. “By reducing impact and bruising, we’re not only protecting the integrity of our mushrooms but also supporting stronger presentation for our retail and foodservice partners.”

A Commitment to Continuous Improvement
The collaboration underscores TGC’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence. By leveraging advanced sensor technology and strong supplier partnerships, TGC continues to enhance quality assurance and maintain its leadership position in the mushroom industry.

The successful development of the custom mushroom-shaped ImpacTrack sensor demonstrates how collaboration between growers and technology providers can create practical, data-driven solutions that benefit the entire supply chain—from farm to consumer.
