Safeway to close 12 stores in three states 

Safeway BB #:404384 plans to close 12 stores in Colorado, Nebraska, and New Mexico this fall. 

According to CBS News Colorado, 10 of the stores are in Colorado, including 4 in the Denver metro area.

A spokesperson for Safeway told the news group that the closures are a result of the Intermountain and Denver divisions becoming the new Mountain West Division, which will consist of stores of the two former divisions. 

The spokesperson said Safeway made the difficult decision to close certain locations after evaluating their performance. All the stores will close on or before November 7.

Safeway is owned by Albertsons BB #:193326, whose merger with Kroger was prevented by regulators late last year.  

As part of the merger, Kroger and Albertsons planned to divest nearly 600 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers to avoid antitrust issues. Most of these Safeway stores set to close were on the list to be divested.
