Amazon plans to open grocery stores in several large U.S. cities, distinct from its Whole Foods brand.
The Wall Street Journal reported March 1 that Amazon plans to broaden its investment in the food business, with its first grocery store scheduled to open in Los Angeles later this year.
According to the story, “Amazon is also exploring an acquisition strategy to widen the new supermarket brand by purchasing regional grocery chains with about a dozen stores under operation, one person said. Amazon is now in talks to open grocery stores in shopping centers in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, the people familiar with the matter said.”
Amazon bought the Whole Foods retail chain in 2017. The company also has 10 Amazon Go check-out-free grocery stores in Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco.
