Flashfood is a Canadian-based grocery app that strives to reduce food waste while decreasing consumer spending, supplier losses, and greenhouse gases emissions.
The Toronto, Ontario-based company is expanding operations into New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.
To prevent food from ending up in landfills and releasing methane gas, Flashfood works with grocers like Loblaws and the Giant Company to discount food items approaching their “best before” dates.
Consumers can buy these products for up to half-off regular prices, which saves them money and reduces product waste by grocers. Instead of discarding food, retailers recoup half of the original price and simultaneously reduce their carbon footprint. Consumers can save money and try out food items that tend to be more expensive.
The mobile app allows customers to select a nearby grocery store and browse the sale items approaching their “best before” date. Customers then pay directly from the app and pick up their groceries in a designated Flashfood Zone at the grocery store.
