Broccoli, cauliflower prices rising

Broccoli prices are on the rise as cooler weather in California growing areas is limiting supplies.

According to USDA market news, broccoli prices on cartons from Salinas, CA have nearly doubled since mid-July.

In an alert to buyers this week Markon Cooperative BB #:123315 said to “expect prices to climb over the next 10-14 days as yields decrease in the fields.”

Markon also noted that demand remains strong on California product, but there are other areas producing broccoli.

“Mexican-grown stocks are available in South Texas,” its report said. “Crown quality is very good. Brown bead, hollow core, and yellowing are minor issues.”

Not surprisingly, cauliflower is following a similar pattern, but so far, the price rise hasn’t been as dramatic as broccoli.

USDA reports prices have only risen a few dollars in July, but the market is up about 50 percent from the beginning of June.

“Cauliflower prices are inching up,” Markon said. “Supplies are tightening following cooler-than-normal temperatures in the Salinas Valley and Santa Maria.”

The cool weather has slowed growth, resulting in lighter volume, Markon said, but quality remains strong with good color and sizing.

It expects this elevated market for at least the next 7 to 10 days.
