Byrne is a major supporter of the strong roots of second, third, and fourth generation farmers, and champions those who already have succession plans in place—to not only keep operations running smoothly, but in the family as well.

And many believe involvement by younger generations is precisely what makes the future of the apple industry so bright.

Just like the image of planting an apple tree signifies hope and prosperity, the industry hopes its deep roots will forge ties between new generations of growers and legions of apple fans to forge an exciting future.

Hartmann has similar hopes for supporting producers. “We embrace change and are always happy to work with our clients to develop new programs to meet the ever-changing demands faced by retailers, wholesalers, and foodservice suppliers nationwide. We want to help independent growers survive in an industry that becomes more and more competitive and industrialized every year.”

Whether consumers are fans of enduring favorites like Red Delicious or Granny Smith, or like the flavor of newer varieties like Honeycrisp, Koru, or Snap Dragon—there’s an apple out there for every taste. Growers, receivers, and retailers alike have plenty to promote and sell, and it looks like the 2016-17 season will bring a bumper crop to store shelves and farmers’ markets across the country.
