Michigan reports 2 deaths in Cyclospora outbreak

On August 3, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 11,234 total cases related to the Cyclospora outbreak, 193 hospitalizations, and two deaths.

“According to medical records, both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. The two Michigan cases became ill prior to the voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce announced by U.S Food and Drug Administration on July 17,” MDHHS said.

It said no additional information will be provided on these two cases.

The CDC has not updated its outbreak investigation since July 24 but posted August 3 that it is aware of the two deaths reported by Michigan.

Its July 24 update expanded the outbreak to nine states linked to iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico and recalled by Taylor Farms de Mexico. That report lists a total of 1,947 people infected with Cyclospora and reporting exposure to Taco Bell, with illnesses started on dates ranging from June 22, 2026 to July 20, 2026

“While the investigation is ongoing, available information indicates that lettuce or salad greens may be a potential source of this outbreak,” MDHHS said on its website. “However, other food items cannot be completely ruled out. No specific type of produce, grower, or supplier has been identified as the source.”
