Florida strawberry growers had ample time to prepare for freezing temperatures that hit production areas over the weekend, and conditions were optimal to protect crops.
Sue Harrell, director of marketing for the Florida Strawberry Growers Association BB #:162601 toured fields in Plant City on January 30, providing a video update on the organization’s social media page.
Growers had time to use overhead irrigation to protect the crops with a coating of ice, she said.
“We were fortunate that the wind laid down so it could get full coverage on all the plants,” Harrell said. “And most of us went in and picked all the ripe fruit off the plants before the freeze happened.”
Harrell said green fruit and blooms typically fare well when protected with ice.
